Ice Cream Social, June 26, 5:30-8pm at Folwell Park

CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO VIEW THE ALBUM

On a warm, June summer evening, Folwell Park was the setting for the annual FNA Ice Cream Social. There was lots of free ice cream along with face painting, music, and a dunk tank. Jojo the Balloon Guy, who makes over 600 different balloon animals, etc.) was there, too. Caricatures by Tony LaMotte were special treasurers to take home. Spin art, the environmental table and the inflatables were big hits, too. The table for making origami cranes (1,000 of them for peace and prosperity on the Northside) was always filled with busy fingers being led through the intricate folds by Jenn Walker of the FNA staff. Thanks to all volunteers (we can't do it without you), the staff of Folwell Park and Folwell Neighborhood Association. All together 42 people made this year's ice cream social the best ever!

Earth Day Cleanup
Saturday, April 19, Folwell Park

Although the weather on Earth Day Cleanup was cold and misty, thirty-four hardy folks (adults and kids) gathered at Folwell Park to help clean up the area. A few residents used bright yellow garbage bags to pick up trash in and around Folwell Park. Other volunteers helped clean and stencil the storm drains that surround the park. The stencils, provided by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation (MPRB) Naturalist Program, indicate that pollution in the storm drains follows a path to the Mississippi River or an area lake. Thank you to REI (a store specializing in outdoor adventure sporting goods) which was present at Folwell Park with information and a drawing for free t-shirts. Neighborhood volunteers, the staff of Folwell Neighborhood Association, Folwell Park and MPRB deserve a big thank you for their hard work and commitment to Earth Day!

Lowry Avenue Bridge Closed : April 25 at 10 am.

Hennepin County closed the Lowry Avenue Bridge, effective 10 a.m. Friday (April 25), due to known structural issues with one of the bridge's piers.

In 2004, bridge engineers discovered Pier 3 had rotated 11 inches out of vertical alignment. Further rotation of the pier has introduced an unreasonable risk to the traveling public. The rotation of the pier, coupled with the normal temperature expansion of the superstructure, has created a situation that prevents an accurate determination of the stresses the bridge is experiencing.

"The structure, we believe, is not in any imminent danger of collapse, but as the air temperature increases, the situation could change without notice - that is our primary concern," said Hennepin County Transportation Department Director Jim Grube.

Use the Rain
If you have been interested in using a rain barrel in your yard but don’t want to spend $200+ to get a nice looking one, check out the Hennepin County website for a beautiful one for only $62. Rain barrels are a great way to prevent run off into our rivers and use what water we get more wisely. It is also great if your downspout area tends to flood; trap that water and use it on your flowers and plants later.

Bunny Breakfast - April 5, 2008

And a great time was had by all...On a beautiful April Saturday, from 9am until 11am at Folwell Park, approximately 150 kids and adults enjoyed a big breakfast of pancakes, sausages, juice and coffee. Everyone enjoyed the two 'big bunnies' who danced, mingled and had their pictures taken with the kids for their photo buttons assisted by a 'bunny helper' who passed out candy and trinkets to the kids. After stops at the face painting table, 'bunny faces' were popping up everywhere! A big hit was the craft 'make and take' activity where kids and adults colored 'flower ornaments' to take with them. As a parting gift, everyone was encouraged to take a flower pinwheel home.

FNA Annual Report for 2007

The Mayor's Budget

The Mayors budget message, delivered on September 24, 2007 was optimistic and challenging. We know that this address will be discussed in the media, both print and electronic in the days to come before the City Council votes to finalize the 2008 budget in December. We are posting the text of his address in full because we believe that residents should read it for themselves. It will take the common will of the City Council, City agencies and residents to move the best strategies for Minneapolis forward with the wisest possible use of resources. Please read Mayor Rybak’s 2008 budget proposal and decide for yourself the next best steps and from a position of knowledge, engage in the discussion with your neighbors and with your Council Member.

6th Annual Dog Daze
Saturday, September 22
10am until 3pm
Folwell Park, 1615 Dowling Ave N

Dog DazeIt was a beautiful day for Dog Daze; sparkling blue skies, a light breeze and cool temperatures provided a glorious setting in north Minneapolis’ Folwell Park for about 200 people who visited with vendors, feasted on the wildly successful “Walking Tacos”, and watched the field demonstrations of Brother Wolf and Friends, Twin Cities Obedience Training Club and C&E Training Center. A special thank you is in order for the annual Blessing of the Animals provided by Brother John Kerr from St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Reverend Linda Koelman, Pastor of North United Methodist Church and Reverend Melissa Pohlman, Pastor of Christ English Lutheran Church. Again this year, as the animals received the Blessing; quiet and gentle tail wagging replaced the earlier raucous barking and persistent wiggling!

Six therapy dogs were honored for their volunteer work at the Family Assistance Center in response to the 35W Bridge collapse. Paws for Learning collaborated with Incident Command staff and organized six therapy dog teams to volunteer at the Family Assistance Center. Besides working with families of the victims, handlers and dogs offered solace and comfort to police officers, police clergy, Red Cross and Salvation Army volunteers, staff of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department and Mayor R.T. Rybak. At the Dog Daze award ceremony, each dog received a crystal cup inscribed with its name provided by the Folwell Neighborhood Association and Broadway Awards, a gift card of PETCO Foundation, a pet bed courtesy of PETCO-Fridley, a free sitting and 8x10 portrait courtesy of Benda Photography, a complimentary session with Brother Wolf and Friends and a gift card from Downtown Dogs.

Dog DazeThe teams that dedicated time to victims and workers are: Jennifer Troy with Girl and Sidney (Paws for Learning), John Burke with Hailee (Paws for Learning), Barb Gafner with Brutus (Instructor/evaluator with a national organization for  therapy dogs and personal visiting agenda in the Twin Cities), Dave Kettering with Sasha (Affiliated with Regions Hospital, St. Paul Children’s Hospital and Health Partners Hospice of the Lakes) and Nancy Brooks with Sassy  (With the Humane Society Animal Ambassadors and the regional instructor for R.E.A.D. -reading events throughout the library system in the metro area).

The day included a Dog Parade with costumes optional. Thirty wonderful dogs from purebreds to mixed breeds pranced their way past the bleachers to the delight of the parade fans. The winners: 3rd Place, Nico; 2nd Place, Twyla and 1st Place, Dora, the adorable Basset!
