Community Gardens

Ensuring there is a space for community members to get their hands in the earth in the middle of an urban concrete setting is key to the connection we value. A connection to the world, ourselves, and each other.

Garden Agreements

FNA is willing to act as a sponsor between a Folwell resident or business owner and the City of Minneapolis to establish a community garden here in the Folwell neighborhood. The Fowell resident is expected to act as manager and caretaker of the agreed upon location by committing to pay the $1 annual sponsor fee, provide landscaping maintenance according to city ordinances and guidelines, work with the Green Team providing updates for FNA, and allow the garden space to be open to the community. FNA will cover the insurance costs required by the City and will contribute to providing some supplies.

The FNA values growing and gathering spaces where residents can build relationships, learn about growing practices, and have access to healthy food.

FNA currently sponsors 2 gardens:

The Story Garden - 3500 Humboldt ave N.

The Story Garden is a quaint charming community garden located at 35th and Humboldt. It is an open growing space for all residents to plant and harvest. There are no assigned plots, but there is a snackable path to create excitement around fresh food for all the youth in the neighborhood. The garden was started in 2015 in response to a tornado that left the lot empty in 2011. It has since grown into a neighborhood gathering space for spoken word events, movies, potlucks, and storytime around the bonfire. To get involved, please reach out to Danielle.tietjen@gmail.com.

Zenn on Penn - 3558 and 3554 Penn ave N.

Zenn on Penn earned its name from Ms.Talibah; a late Folwell elder who contributed growing efforts at this garden. To continue with the growing efforts, the FNA has partnered with the Growing up North Project to assist with managing. This garden is open to the community for planting and taking at will. The community is encouraged to participate at their own leisure as well as when Growing North is there to offer assistance. Email info@folwell.org to get involved.
