Free water ski shows kick off Minneapolis Aquatennial this weekend
Minneapolis (July 14, 2008) --- The Twin Cities River Rats Water Ski Show Team will perform free, hour-long water ski shows on the Mississippi River on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day.
The location has moved a couple of blocks from previous years to just south of the Broadway Bridge on the west bank of the Mississippi River (about halfway between the Broadway Bridge and Plymouth Avenue Bridge near 17th Avenue on West River Road).
Bring a blanket or lawn chair to catch some of the 75 members of the Twin Cities River Rats performing various water skiing acts with skits and music including barefooting, jumping, human pyramids, and other thrilling tricks.
This year's theme is entitled, "River Rat Tryouts." Laugh along as some "new" members try to become River Rats despite their lack of skiing skills (and social skills in general!)
The Twin Cities River Rats Water Ski Show Team is a 100% volunteer organization and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Team members participate in all aspects of the show, from skiing to boat driving to announcing to rolling ropes. The team performs free shows every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. June through August.

Does the outside of your home need painting, landscaping or minor repairs?
A Brush with Kindness serves low-income homeowners who live in targeted areas in Twin Cities neighborhoods and whose homes need exterior restoration. A limited number of interior projects for seniors struggling with clutter, paint and repair issues are worked on over the winter months. Work occurs year round. Applications are processed ongoing throughout the year. Volunteers from businesses, churches and service organizations will do all the work alongside able-bodied residents. Assessing homes begins in March, 2008. All paint and most other supplies will be furnished by A Brush with Kindness. Volunteers supply their own food, tools and any additional supplies needed to complete the project. Most projects will be completed within a week, depending on the size of the home and number of volunteers. Volunteers, together with the homeowner, will work out project details, including the scope of the work and when the job will be completed. A Brush with Kindness is a neighborhood program of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.

A recent amendment has been made to the Minneapolis ordinance regarding nuisance conditions, which includes things like tall grass and weeds, vegetation overhanging the public sidewalk or alley, or rubbish and debris on private property. The new amendment allows the City of Minneapolis to correct these conditions without notice. Since February 1, 2006, property owners who have received two or more notices to correct a nuisance condition within the prior twelve-month period may no longer receive notification of future violations. The City may correct the nuisance condition and assess the costs without sending further notice. All costs of such removal or correction will be added as a special tax assessment against the property. The initial notice will remain in effect for twelve months from the date it is sent.
Projects are limited to exterior repairs and typically include painting, caulking, ramp constructions, siding replacement, landscape and other service. Hearts & Hammers assists homeowners who have limited access to home-improvement programs, specifically the elderly and those who are physically disabled. For information and eligibility requirements call Mike Hutson, 952.922.2451 or Mike Moore, 952.921.2612, http://www.heartsandhammers.org or you may pick up an application at the neighborhood office.
