The busy holiday season is upon us! Amid the bright lights and visits to shopping malls, holiday parties, museums and other local establishments, it is important for people to take a few simple precautions to avoid being a victim of a crime of opportunity.
It is during the holiday season that burglars, pick-pockets, purse snatchers, and con artists are at their busiest. The following simple tips will go a long way to make your holidays a pleasant and safe one:

While working in your yard, keep your doors locked * Don’t keep ladders or equipment in yard * Trim shrubs, bushes & hedges to three feet * Consider limiting height of your solid fence * Call 911 if you see suspicious people or vehicles * If you are not working in your garage, lock the doors * Keep lawn equipment and bicycles in a locked garage * Utilize a padlock in the garage door track as an additional lock * Secure the service door with a deadbolt lock and maximum security strike plate * Put your purse, keys or wallet away, out of sight.

Light is one of the best crime fighters, especially as we enter the season of darker and longer nights. If you haven’t already done so, try “dusk to dawn” fixtures, socket inserts or motion detectors on the front and back of your home. When you are away, especially during the holiday season, use timers or leave lights on in more than one room.
